Dear ESGAR Members, Colleagues and Friends,
Twenty-seven years after the first ESGAR (ESGR) Meeting in Crete in 1990, Greece is proud to host ESGAR 2017 in Athens! Two unforgettable ESGAR meetings followed in 1996 and 2006, again in Crete under the meeting presidency of Prof. Nicholas Gourtsoyiannis. ESGAR 2017 returning to Greece underlines the long standing and strong ties between ESGAR and our country.
Year by year the ESGAR Annual Meeting has become more popular, more comprehensive, more innovative and more influential, while maintaining the two core characteristics of ESGAR: scientific quality and family atmosphere. The upcoming meeting in Athens builds on the success of previous ones, providing high quality education, demonstrating developments and innovations in abdominal diagnostic and interventional radiology, presenting research activities and facilitating exchange of experience and ideas.
The ESGAR 2017 Programme Committee Members have designed a new exciting programme. The Postgraduate Course, a major educational activity, on “Imaging the post-operative Abdomen” addresses the challenges in every day clinical practice when dealing with imaging evaluation of patients after surgery. The successful concept of Lecture Sessions, Plenary Sessions, different Workshops, the School of ESGAR (following the chapters from the European Training Curriculum), the Advanced US and the CT Colonography Centres covers a wide spectrum of topics and is adapted to different levels to meet the requirements of each participant, from the trainee to the highly dedicated specialist.
The selection of Athens as the host city for ESGAR 2017 is an excellent choice for many reasons and is symbolic at the same time. The city is named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom, inspiration and learning. Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world. Its dates back to 3200 BC and although it has been influenced by many cultures and various conquerors, the city has never lost its unique identity. The contribution of the Ancient Greek-Athenians in science and philosophy has been recognised worldwide and the city is considered as the heart of Western civilisation and the place where democracy was born. There is plenty to see from the glorious past of the city and also much to enjoy in the modern and lively capital of Greece with a Mediterranean flavour. Our meeting venue, the Megaron Athens International Conference Centre (MAICC), is situated just minutes from the vibrant centre and is within a short walk to all historic landmarks of the city.
As the President of the Hellenic Radiological Society and on behalf of all Greek radiologists, I would like to express our gratitude for accepting Athens as the meeting place of this important event. The Local Organising Committee will make every possible effort to ensure another successful meeting in Athens. We are proud and pleased to organise and host this important and exciting educational and scientific event. We hope that you will again enjoy the ESGAR Annual Meeting, this time with a specific Greek flavour.
I would like to sincerely thank Celso Matos, ESGAR President, Luis Martí-Bonmatí, Programme Committee Chairman, and all the members of the Executive and Programme Committee as well as Brigitte Lindlbauer, ESGAR Executive Director, and the team from the Central ESGAR Office for their steady, tireless and effective efforts, their collaboration, support and kindness. From its birth, thanks to the great teamwork and the inspiration of each leadership, ESGAR continues to develop, to improve and to flourish.
Looking forward to welcoming all of you in Athens on the occasion for ESGAR 2017!
