Dear ESGAR Fellows, Members, Faculty Members and Congress participants,
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
As we have seen in the recent past, the coronavirus pandemic has a huge impact on our welfare and educational activities. Statements of public health authorities worldwide recommend to not hold workshops or congresses and furthermore, to also not participate in such activities.
Although the Dutch government has not yet called for the cancellation of major events beyond the date of March 31, we feel that it would be irresponsible towards our ESGAR community and the public health to proceed with the congress at this moment in time. In addition, with travel restrictions elsewhere affecting attendance of both participants and faculty, we cannot guarantee the high scientific quality of our Annual Meeting on the original dates we were striving for.
It is thus with great regret and a very heavy heart that, after careful consideration, ESGAR decided to cancel the 31st Annual Meeting and Postgraduate Course in recognition to the growing health risks related to the coronavirus. Unfortunately, we are not able to postpone the Annual Meeting because we were not able to find an adequate alternative date, despite our efforts and willingness.
It goes without saying that this decision was not made lightly, but when we cannot fully guarantee the wellbeing of our attendees, partners, and staff, we feel this is the right thing to do. It will put ESGAR in a very difficult financial situation, yet, we are convinced to make it through this crisis with the commitment and help of our members.
In these turbulent times, the ESGAR Office is doing their best to respond to any query at the earliest possible time. Also, please be informed that we are planning a virtual congress online, publishing e-Posters that were already submitted and reviewed, the cases of the day quiz, and scientific paper presenters will be asked to provide their presentations electronically. We will provide further information soon, which of course will depend on the worldwide development of this crisis, and the availability and willingness of the presenters.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to all colleagues involved in our congress, for their understanding and continuous support. We hope that we can count on your commitment in the future, thank you for your understanding in these difficult times, and we wish you all the best. Please stay healthy!
on behalf of the entire Executive Committee
