Annual Meeting

Wednesday, June 14 to Friday, June 16, 2023

Educational and Scientific Programme Features

Advanced Ultrasound at ESGAR 2023
At ESGAR 2023 the modality of ultrasound will be one of the highlighted topics. Throughout the meeting, sessions, keynote lectures and case discussions will cover from basic technical aspects of contrast-enhanced ultrasound to guidelines of applications and innovations in Abdominal Ultrasound technologies. Sessions will be dedicated to the benign and malignant liver lesions including CEUS LIRADS classification in high HCC risk patients, as well as interventional procedure assistance, post-treatment efficacy and non-liver organ assessment (e.g. bowel) in emergency and chronic diseases.

ESGAR Tutorials
Throughout ESGAR 2023, different tutorials will be offered to the registrants. Compared to a formal lecture, the smaller tutorial environment is intended to facilitate more active discussion between expert instructors and the audience, allowing registrants to address their specific needs.

Cases of the Day
Scientific Coordinators: C. Reiner, Zurich/CH; R. Cannella, Palermo/IT
Different cases will be displayed each day from Tuesday to Friday, giving registrants the opportunity to take part in the quiz and check the results on the following day. The  participant(s) who solve(s) the most cases correctly will be announced in the ESGAR Newsletter.

Image guided therapy
An educational feature focusing on Interventional Radiology (IR) in the GI tract and Abdomen was first introduced during the ESGAR 2009 Annual Meeting. Since then, it was expanded at subsequent meetings to reflect the central role interventional techniques play in the multidisciplinary management of patients with gastrointestinal and abdominal diseases. Features include lecture sessions, ESGAR tutorials, scientific papers and posters as well as incorporating relevant techniques into the postgraduate course. The daily IGT sessions will be led by experts in the field, emphasising key practical issues, ranging from basic to advanced knowledge and skills with a special focus on knowledge useful for abdominal radiologists working in diagnostic radiology. As in all ESGAR formats, interactivity will be encouraged between delegates and faculty to facilitate useful practical discussions. This includes case-discussions led by the moderators, including all speakers. We believe that this format will help to augment the various practical aspects and procedural tips and tricks and encourage the audience to interact with IR experts in this learning environment.

Lecture Sessions
All Lecture Sessions are dedicated to a special area of interest with defined lecture objectives to ensure integration and avoid overlap. Several sessions have a multidisciplinary approach or are organised in collaboration with other societies, such as the European Society of Urogenital Radiology (ESUR).

Industry Symposia
From Tuesday to Friday at lunchtime, symposia will be held in collaboration with industrial companies and corporate partners. The subjects of these symposia will include a variety of “hot topics” concerning the ongoing development in some major fields of
abdominal diagnostic and interventional radiology.

PLENARY SESSIONS:

  • Clinical Files: An experienced moderator will present four themed and challenging abdominal and GI cases to a radiology panel composed of two teams of two radiologists. Each case will be chosen to illustrate challenging diagnosis and will also allow to discuss therapeutic options available for the clinical management of the patient. The interpretation session will be live, as the panellists will only see the cases 24 hours before the session. The panellists will describe the imaging findings and the moderator will guide the panellists with questions regarding differentials and patient management. The aim of this session is to stress the central role of clinical radiology in today’s patient management and to show how experts deal with challenging cases.
  • Nick Gourtsoyiannis’ Foundation Course I and II: This educational feature, named after Prof. N. Gourtsoyiannis, is a mini rad-path course designed to teach fundamental imaging findings in specific abdominal conditions correlated with up-to-date pathologic information. The specific topics to be discussed in this year’s rad-path course are metabolic fatty liver disease and rectal cancer.
  • One Case - Three Lessons: In this session each panellist shares a clinical case where they personally made a mistake and then develop the three lessons that they learned from this. The goal of this format is to learn how experts reflect on their own errors to avoid making important mistakes in the diagnosis of cases in the future. A broad range of diseases, modalities and clinical situations will be presented, and the moderators will bring together shared themes during discussion amongst the experts. The session will be managed in an entertaining and educational style with improvisation, humour and openness.

Postgraduate Course
At ESGAR 2023, the Postgraduate Course “Fire in the Abdomen” is offered on the first day of the meeting. In four sessions the topics of hepatitis, biliary inflammation, pancreatitis, peritonitis and GI inflammation are addressed. Each session deals with the respective imaging diagnosis and challenges and also focuses on the appropriate multidisciplinary management of patients. A 30-minute case-based discussion at the end of each Postgraduate Course session exemplifies the topic and enhances the learning experience.

Research Tutorial
The research tutorials will take us back to the beginning and will cover how to first get started in research both in general, but also specifically in AI. Planning to submit an abstract to ESGAR? We provide our top 10 tips for delivering an educational or scientific presentation. All tutorials are led by leading ESGAR researchers and allow plenty of time for questions and discussion. In addition, there will be a chance to meet senior ESGAR members in our group mentorship sessions. Our experts can answer your questions about any aspect of abdominal radiology research and getting started in your career.

School of ESGAR
Scientific Coordinators: R. Cannella, Palermo/IT; K. De Paepe, Cambridge/UK; C. Reiner, Zurich/CH
This is an educational pathway within the annual ESGAR meeting which includes a selection of the most important topics of abdominal radiology following the chapters of the European Training Curriculum and the corresponding learning objectives. This pathway will cover the most fundamental and important aspects of postoperative imaging of the lower abdomen, imaging of the benign liver lesions, gastric cancer, abdominal trauma and imaging of gastrointestinal stromal tumours and abdominal sarcomas. The School of ESGAR will be open from Wednesday to Friday.

Scientific Exhibition - Poster Exhibition
All scientific and educational exhibits (posters) at ESGAR 2023 will be displayed in electronic poster format. The poster system allows registrants to submit their exhibits online, to view them in the conference centre and send selected material to participants’ individual e-mail addresses for easy referencing. The scientific and educational posters displayed at ESGAR 2023 in the electronic poster exhibition will be included in the permanent ESGAR Online Poster Database after the meeting.

Scientific Session
Researchers will present original papers on new and original aspects of abdominal imaging and intervention. Selected papers will be gathered into sessions, each dealing with a homogenous topic. Time for discussion between researchers and attendees will be available after each presentation.

Tricky cases from my day job
Coordinators: R. Cannella, Palermo/IT; K. De Paepe, Cambridge/UK; C. Reiner, Zurich/CH
This session format on Wednesday, June 14 and Thursday, June 15 involves brief case presentation and interactive discussion of challenging cases from everyday clinical practice.
